We went to our first flyball competition this weekend. We’ve watched many times, but running a dog and being on a team is much different. Josh ran his girl Karma, I learned how to line judge and box judge. Saw some amazing dogs - unbelievably fast. Of course, the lovely Karma is right up there with the best of them.

After a rocky start Saturday morning, during which Karma decided it would be better to conserve energy by running AROUND the jumps instead of over them, we got that small but important issue straightened out and she reverted to a “flyball machine.”

It’s amazing to me, and I’ve seen dogs do lots of crazy stuff, but these dogs are serious competitors. They know when they are racing and when they are practicing. I watched a standard poodle look over at the other team at every start. When his mom sent him on a practice run alone, he was pretty slow getting that ball, but as soon as there was competition, man, he turned on the speed. Hilarious! Every day dogs floor me with their perception of the world around them.
