My very favorite and most memorable conversation involving dogs happened over 10 years ago while volunteering at a little animal shelter out in the Nevada desert. I was helping to train dogs that were available for adoption, cleaning kennels, playing with kitty cats, and answering phones. I got a phone call from a concerned owner who wanted to know how he could tell if his dog was pregnant. Trying to be ever so helpful, I asked “Has she been in heat recently?” Long pause, some thought, and “No, I keep her tied in the shade.”
