Dog Training….Unraveled

Pet Expo!

This week the Global Pet Expo is in San Diego and HOLY COW IS IT HUGE!! I am working tomorrow for Bamboo products, showing off the fabulous new Furbuster (my dogs will surely be naked by the end of the day), and got to sneak in today and check out some of the goodies. This is the single most massive trade show I’ve ever been to - it takes up the entire lower floor of the convention center, AND has a bunch of stuff on the upper level that I haven’t seen yet.

Anything and everything you can imagine for dogs, cats, ferrets, fish, birds, rodents, lizards and snakes, even some horse stuff - it’s unreal. Makes PetsMart seem so, like, totally yesterday man. So far the single most useless item I have seen is doggie bathing suits. Really, the human-animal bond may be crossing a line. I admit, I dress my pugs, well, and the Border Collie, and I would dress the Lab if I could find cute things big enough for him; but I dress them for fun and for the little guys, warmth. A bathing suit really seems to be taking it over the top. “We’ll just be out lounging by the pool and little Diva will need her swim suit so her neverminds don’t get too tanned. Wouldn’t want to mess up those tan lines we’ve been working on all summer.”

The next product that says we’ve gone too far as humans was the stroller for LARGE DOGS. I can almost, almost wrap my mind around a stroller for an ailing or aging small dog - but for something over 50lbs? Dear Dog, either let the damn dog walk or leave it home if it can’t! I can just imagine being an old dog wheeled around in a stroller, how humiliating that would be. Can you see me in 5 years pushing Dyson’s enormous self around the block in his very own stroller? Ya, no. Someone was actually examining this miraculous new device and saying how their clients loved the strollers but always asked “But what about big dogs?” I promptly butted in with, “Perhaps they should make them walk?” I got a few dirty looks and went on my way.

Tomorrow I will be taking four different dogs and working all day, I can only begin to imagine the blog posts that will come out of this event. Considering I don’t like people touching my dogs, and this is an entire convention of pet lovers who left their beloved Fluffies at home to be here, I’m sure they will all need to touch my dogs. Combined with the fact that I only have limited tolerance for stupid questions, this should be fun. But for what they are paying me, I will smile and make nice until my ears fall off! Wish us luck!
