Karma

Karma is the newest addition to our little wacko family. She is four years old and completely nuts. Josh wanted a border collie, Josh has always wanted a border collie, so when a good friend of mine said we could have hers, I drug poor Karma home. Karma is completely trained, well behaved in the house, great with other dogs, doesn’t chase my cats or bother my birds, and she’s just about the cuddliest thing ever. I know, I know - why didn’t your friend want her? Because my dear friend is doing more and more competition in schutzhund, and Karma is not a schutzhund dog.(Karma is also very squishy and needy, and that is just not my friend’s style of dog - but we love it.) Karma plays flyball. Karma is a flyball machine. Her first mommy did a fabulous job training her, and Karma has already achieved the highest flyball award - Flyball Grand Champion in NAFA.

Karma is Josh’s dog, and she has filled some of the void left by Rowan, who adored Josh and made a complete fool of herself whenever Josh came home from work. Karma does the same - wiggling, swishing, whining, and nearly giving herself a breakdown - only she does this when either of us look at her, not just when we come home. We adore Karma, and for someone who is not exactly active, she’s the perfect border collie. Beautiful, and skilled at things like posing on the couch, getting her hair brushed, and being petted and held all the time; Karma can really turn it on when it’s time to play ball. She’s wicked fast, and goes nuts for the ball or frisbee. Josh wants to take her herding, at this years Wags for Wishes, she stared those darn sheep right into a corner.

We are grateful for Karma, we didn’t even realize there was an empty space in our family, until she came to fill it. Oh ya, and she’s squinchy, because she squinches her eyes closed and grins when she gets all submissive and pathetic. I’ve never seen a dog quite as free with the submissive grinning as she is. It’s pretty funny.

  1. Great pictures. I have a warm spot in my heart for border collies.

  2. Beautiful dog, Michelle and Josh. It reminds me very much of Blackie - a dog we grew up with in the South of about 50 years ago. Back then, most dogs were allowed to roam the city streets at will, but Blackie did well and lasted about 16 years in the three different cities - Birmingham, Atlanta, and Tampa - in which we lived.

We called him “The Gentleman” because of his gentle nature in a houseful of raucous kids, but he was a survivor and could fight like the dickens. We didn’t know what border collies were back then, but he was marked almost exactly like your Karma. I’ll send y’all a picture if I can find one. Sniff, sniff…I think I’m going to cry.
